Designer Christian Dior didn’t always work in the fashion industry. In fact, he studied political science and served in the military for quite some time, mostly at his parents’ insistence. Finally, after leaving the military and going through a period of uncertainty about his future, Christian Dior returned to Paris and, in 1935, started selling sketches. At first, Christian Dior’s hat designs were his most popular creations, but he continued to work on dress designed. In 1938, Dior was hired by Robert Piguet to contribute dress designs to Piguet’s line. However, Dior was called back to the military during World War II, serving in Southern France. After the war, Christian Dior returned to Paris and went to work for Lucien Lelong.
Five years later, Christian Dior opened his own house with the financial backing of textile merchant Marcel Boussac. During this time, Dior helped rebuild Paris’s fashion industry and debuted many of his signature collections. In 1948, the Dior line expanded to include perfumes, furs, ties, and more, and the brand quickly expanded to a world-wide name. Christian Dior died in 1957, but his name lives on as one of the best and the brightest in the fashion industry.
