The name Gucci is known for high quality items, but when Guccio Gucci first started his small company in 1906, the Florence based leather goods shop only sold bags to horsemen. As the years passed and the Gucci name became more well-known, however, the Gucci line quickly expanded to include many different types of high quality and luxury luggage. In 1938, after years of prospering, Gucci opened his first retail shop in Rome. As the automobile replaced the traditional horse and buggy, Gucci’s line shifted from horsemen bags to trunks and other larger luggage items.

Several years later, the traditional Gucci icon was born: the leather bag with bamboo handles. This was followed by the creation of the Gucci red stripped webbing in the 1950's, giving birth to the traditional Gucci bag and color scheme.
