The
One of the most well-known names in the world, Prada has its beginnings in a line of shoes, handbags, and trunks. Mario Prada started his line of merchandise in 1913, and quickly experienced success. After marketing his wares in both Europe and the United States, Prada settled in Milan and opened two boutiques.
The best selling and most famous of Prada’s items was the classic Prada suitcase. It was made of walrus skin, which was very heavy. As times changes and people started looking for lighter luggage, Prada redesigned his luggage and started using high quality wood, tortoise shell, and even crystal. Soon, the Prada line expanded to high quality items made out of fabric, especially waterproof fabrics.
While Prada enjoyed much success, by the 1970's, the company was no longer at the top of the world. However, all of that changed when Miuccia Prada took over the business in 1979. A young woman in her late twenties, Miuccia introduces many new items into the Prada line, including shoes and clothing. The House of Prada has had its ups and downs over the years, but thanks to Miuccia Prada, the company is once again on top of the world.
